Mathias Foit _ Profilbild

Welcome

I’m a graduate in Anglophone literary, cultural and translation studies, and I hold a PhD degree in the history of the late modern period from the Free University of Berlin. I also studied at the University of Wrocław and the University of South Wales.

As a scholar, I specialise in the history of gender and sexuality, particularly queer history. My first monograph, Queer Urbanisms in Wilhelmine and Weimar Germany: Of Towns and Villages  (2023), charts a previously undiscovered world of queer social, political and cultural life in the easternmost provinces of the German Reich. I’ve also been engaged in a number of projects relating to local and regional queer histories in Central and Eastern Europe – most recently, the Wrocław-based project entitled Odmieńcy. Queerowy Wrocław w latach 1871-1949  (“Queer Breslau/Wroclaw, 1871-1949”).

My academic interest

revolve around late-nineteenth- and twentieth-century queer history, the relations between queer and nationalism, people’s history, queer geography and the geography of sex, among others.

Born and raised in Upper Silesia in Poland, I have been based in Berlin since 2016.
